Thank you!\u201d Trump wrote on social media on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Witkoff, Trump\u2019s special envoy to the Middle East, also said on Thursday evening that he hoped \u201ca diplomatic resolution\u201d could be reached to quell tensions between Tehran and Washington.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4245182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4245182\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4245182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2026-01-16T141814Z_1242054986_RC2E2JA50U2H_RTRMADP_3_IRAN-ECONOMY-PROTESTS-1768595938.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"A burned bus in Tehran, Iran\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4245182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A bus burned during protests in Tehran, Iran, January 16, 2026 [Majid Asgaripour\/West Asia News Agency via Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Roxane Farmanfarmaian, a lecturer at the University of Cambridge specialising in international relations and the Middle East, said the Trump administration has sent \u201ca great deal of mixed signals\u201d in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to know where the red lines are, and for [Iran] to then feel any confidence in any talks that might begin,\u201d Farmanfarmaian told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>For now, she said, the Iranian authorities are moving to \u201cquiet things down\u201d domestically \u2013 including by not executing any demonstrators \u2013 \u201cand to proceed to try to improve the economic situation, which is what\u2019s truly the threat to this regime\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were the largest since a 2022-2023 protest movement spurred by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating the country\u2019s strict dress code for women.<\/p>\n<p>While the internet blackout has made it difficult to get information from Iran, Amnesty International warned this week that \u201cmass unlawful killings\u201d appear to have been \u201ccommitted on an unprecedented scale\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The rights group urged the international community to demand investigations into what happened and hold any perpetrators to account.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Al Jazeera\u2019s Asadi said on Friday that the Iranian authorities are \u201ctrying to keep the situation under control, both domestically and internationally\u201d, amid the possibility of any re-escalation with the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to keep the doors of diplomacy \u2026 open while also sending messages of warning, pertaining to their preparedness for any scenario,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Internet access remains cut off as the streets of Tehran, other Iranian cities are largely calm after widescale unrest.
