I know that these criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has been accused of overseeing a years-long crackdown on his political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite that, many Ugandans still praise the longtime leader as the man who ended Uganda\u2019s post-independence chaos and oversaw rapid economic growth in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really very happy to see he\u2019s won,\u201d said Isaac Kamba, a 37-year-old teacher at a pro-government rally in a Kampala cricket ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victory comes because of his hard work, dedication and commitment to the people of Uganda,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency said the mood at the rally was less than jubilant, however, with a presenter at one point ordering the crowd to be more animated if they wanted to receive the free food.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"intimidation-arrests-abductions\">\u2018Intimidation, arrests, abductions\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Election observers said on Saturday they saw no evidence of ballot stuffing but denounced \u201creports of intimidation, arrest and abductions\u201d targeting the opposition and civil society.<\/p>\n<p>That \u201cinstilled fear and eroded public trust in the electoral process\u201d, said former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who was representing election observers from the African Union and other regional bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan told reporters that the internet shutdown \u201cdisrupted effective observation\u201d of this week\u2019s vote and \u201cincreased suspicion\u201d but that the overall conduct of the polls on Election Day was \u201cpeaceful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>AFP reported a heavy police presence around the capital, Kampala, on Saturday, as the authorities have sought to prevent any possible protests.<\/p>\n<p>The Ugandan opposition said at least 10 people were killed by police in an attack on a local opposition lawmaker\u2019s home in the town of Butambala, about 55km (35 miles) southwest of Kampala.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities put the death toll at seven, with police alleging that machete-wielding opposition \u201cgoons\u201d attacked a police station and vote-tallying centre.<\/p>\n<p>During this campaign, Bobi Wine\u2019s rallies were repeatedly interrupted by security forces firing tear gas and bullets. At least one person was killed in the violence and hundreds of opposition supporters were arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Museveni\u2019s victory was long viewed as a formality, as the former rebel\u00a0fighter has total control over the state and security apparatus.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office four decades ago, he has changed the constitution twice to remove age and term limits.<\/p>\n<p>His governing party, the National Resistance Movement, also had a commanding lead in parliamentary seats, according to provisional results.
