{"id":9002,"date":"2026-01-17T19:47:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T19:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=9002"},"modified":"2026-01-17T19:47:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T19:47:48","slug":"zelenskyy-demands-faster-energy-imports-as-ukraine-reels-from-power-outages-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=9002","title":{"rendered":"Zelenskyy demands faster energy imports as Ukraine reels from power outages | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said imports of electricity and additional power equipment must be accelerated as Russian attacks on Ukraine\u2019s infrastructure have left the country reeling from its worst wartime energy crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post on Saturday, Zelenskyy said the capital Kyiv and the Kharkiv and\u00a0Zaporizhia regions were particularly hard-hit by power outages linked to the intensified Russian strikes.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cWe need to accelerate as much as possible the increase in electricity imports and the provision of additional equipment from partners,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cAll decisions for this are already in place, and the increase in imports must proceed without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian government has declared an energy emergency as the damaged power grid is meeting only 60 percent of the country\u2019s electricity needs.<\/p>\n<p>The situation has also been exacerbated by exceptionally cold temperatures, leaving families across Ukraine struggling to stay warm.<\/p>\n<p>Since it invaded its neighbour in February 2022, Russia has routinely targeted Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure during the winter, seeking to put pressure on Ukrainian leaders to agree to Moscow\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations and other observers have condemned this year\u2019s Russian assault on Ukraine\u2019s energy, stressing that children and the elderly are most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s attacks are \u201ccausing terrible human suffering\u201d, NATO chief Mark Rutte said earlier this week, adding that the military alliance was \u201ccommitted to ensuring that Ukraine continues to get the crucial support needed to defend today and ultimately secure a lasting peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thousands-without-power\">Thousands without power<\/h2>\n<p>Zelenskyy said 400,000 people were experiencing \u201cdifficulties with electricity\u201d in Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s second-largest city, after overnight Russian strikes.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, said three people were wounded in a Russian attack on a critical infrastructure facility in the city\u2019s industrial district on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about serious strikes on the system that keeps the city warm and lit,\u201d he wrote on Telegram, adding that the system is \u201cconstantly operating at its limits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Each new strike, Terekhov added, means \u201cmaintaining a stable supply will become even more difficult, and recovery will be longer and harder\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities also said 56,000 families in the Bucha area outside Kyiv were without power after the latest Russian attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s energy ministry has said most regions of Ukraine had electricity restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to constant massive attacks by the Russian Federation, a state of emergency has been declared in the Ukrainian energy sector,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4247522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4247522\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4247522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/reuters_696bb986-1768667526.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"FILE PHOTO: Yuliia Chumak, 32, who is eight months pregnant, warms her three-year-old daughter Kvitoslava's hands with her breath, as they get ready to leave for the kindergarten in their apartment during power cuts following Russian missile and drone strikes, in Kyiv, Ukraine, January 14, 2026. We are working to achieve results,\u201d Budanov said in a post on the Telegram app.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said the team\u2019s main task in the US was \u201cto present the full and accurate picture of what Russian strikes are causing\u201d in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong the consequences of this terror is the discrediting of the diplomatic process: people lose faith in diplomacy, and Russian attacks constantly undermine even the limited opportunities for dialogue that existed before,\u201d he said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American side must understand this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine and the US have drafted a 20-point peace proposal, but Russia has yet to comment on it as\u00a0Washington\u2019s efforts to end the fighting have so far failed to achieve an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian government has made several demands over the past months, including territorial concessions and assurances that Ukraine won\u2019t seek NATO membership.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Zelenskyy again blamed Moscow for a lack of progress. \u201cUkraine has never been and will never be a roadblock to peace, and it is now up to our partners to determine whether diplomacy moves forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said imports of electricity and additional power equipment must be accelerated as Russian attacks on Ukraine\u2019s infrastructure have left the country reeling from its worst wartime energy crisis.
