aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The United States has approved a $2.3bn weapons sale to Singapore that includes P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft, lightweight torpedoes, and air defence systems.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department notified the US Congress of the sale on Wednesday, according to a statement on the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) website.<\/p>\n<section list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The proposed sale will allow Singapore to \u201cmeet current and future threats by providing a credible maritime force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in US allied operations\u201d, the DSCA said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis proposed sale will enhance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Asia,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Chong, a political scientist, told Al Jazeera that the patrol aircraft are used to protect Singapore\u2019s \u201cextended sea lanes of communication and its very busy waterways\u201d in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition of four Boeing P-8A aircraft is part of Singapore\u2019s long-term plan to replace its ageing fleet of Fokker 50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, according to its Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announced plans to buy the US aircraft in September, following a meeting with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>The US has $8.38bn in active government-to-government sales with Singapore, which range from munitions to F-35 fighter jets, according to the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is due to receive the first aircraft from its outstanding order of 20 F-35s later this year, according to its Defence Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Singapore cooperate on a range of security issues, and their militaries regularly host joint
