{"id":9438,"date":"2026-01-21T20:56:47","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T20:56:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=9438"},"modified":"2026-01-21T20:56:47","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T20:56:47","slug":"spains-train-drivers-call-for-strike-as-deadly-derailments-fuel-concern-transport-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=9438","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s train drivers call for strike as deadly derailments fuel concern | Transport News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Union slams \u2018constant deterioration of railway\u2019 after major crash in southern Spain kills at least 43, injures dozens.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The largest train drivers\u2019 union in Spain has called for a nationwide strike to demand safety assurances after three derailments left dozens dead and wounded this week.<\/p>\n<p>Train operators\u2019 union SEMAF said in a statement on Wednesday that it would \u201cdemand criminal liability from those responsible for ensuring safety in the railway infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cThis situation of constant deterioration of the railway is unacceptable,\u201d the union said.<\/p>\n<p>The strike call came just days after a collision between two high-speed trains in the southern province of Cordoba on Sunday killed at least 43 people, marking the country\u2019s deadliest train crash in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate incident late on Tuesday, a driver died and 37 people were injured after a commuter train hit a retaining wall that fell onto the tracks in Gelida, near Barcelona, according to regional officials.<\/p>\n<p>Another derailment of a train on Barcelona\u2019s regional network was also reported on Tuesday after a rock fell on the line, but no injuries were reported, rail network operator ADIF said.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the government would \u201csit down and talk\u201d with the union to try to avoid the strike, which he said was motivated by \u201cthe emotional state that the train drivers are experiencing right now following the death of two colleagues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the incidents have fuelled questions about the safety of Spain\u2019s rail network, as well as criticism from opposition lawmakers and commuters.<\/p>\n<p>Raluca Maria Pasca, a 45-year-old waitress, said she had noticed that high-speed trains \u201chave been shaking lately\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve felt it myself. They need to fix the problem,\u201d she told the AFP news agency at the train station in the southern city of Cordoba.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s conservative main opposition Popular Party also has demanded an \u201cimmediate clarification\u201d on the state of the nation\u2019s railways. \u201cThis is too much,\u201d party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo wrote on X.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"speed-limits-imposed\">Speed limits imposed<\/h2>\n<p>The Spanish authorities haven\u2019t ruled out the possibility of finding more victims in the wreckage from Sunday\u2019s high-speed crash.<\/p>\n<p>Three days of national mourning are under way while the cause is being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>The crash happened when the tail end of a train carrying 289 passengers on the route from Malaga to the country\u2019s capital, Madrid, derailed and crashed into an incoming train travelling from Madrid to Huelva, another southern city, according to ADIF.<\/p>\n<p>The collision took place near the town of Adamuz, and local authorities said bodies were found hundreds of metres from the crash site.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities continued their search on Wednesday, finding a 43rd victim. Another 37 people remained hospitalised on Wednesday morning, while 86 people were treated and discharged, regional officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, services across Catalonia\u2019s main commuter rail network have been suspended completely while safety checks are carried out and officials say they will not resume until the lines are considered safe.<\/p>\n<p>ADIF has imposed a temporary 160km\/h (100mph) speed limit on parts of the high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona after train drivers reported bumps.<\/p>\n<p>Trains travelling between Madrid and the eastern city of Valencia have also been ordered to cap their speed on a 1.8km (one-mile) stretch of the line, the network operator said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In August, SEMAF \u2013 the train operators\u2019 union \u2013 had sent a letter asking ADIF to investigate flaws on train lines across the country due to increased usage and to reduce speeds at certain points until the tracks were fully repaired.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations were made for high-speed train lines, including the one where Sunday\u2019s crash happened, the union told The Associated Press news agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Union slams \u2018constant deterioration of railway\u2019 after major crash in southern Spain kills at least 43, injures dozens.
