US president says \u2018framework of a future deal\u2019 on Greenland and wider Arctic region reached with NATO chief Mark Rutte.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n United States President Donald Trump says he is abandoning plans to impose steep tariffs on European countries opposed to his plans to take control of Greenland, after holding talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte.<\/p>\n Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday that the tariffs won\u2019t be imposed because he and Rutte agreed to \u201cthe framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region\u201d.<\/p>\n list of 3 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n \u201cThis solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,\u201d he said, without going into further details about what was agreed upon.<\/p>\n Trump has been threatening for weeks to take control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous island that belongs to Denmark, spurring widespread condemnation in Europe and around the world.<\/p>\n Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose 10 percent tariffs on Denmark, \u200cFinland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, starting on February 1, over the countries\u2019 opposition to his Greenland takeover push.<\/p>\n Trump has repeatedly accused Denmark of failing to do enough to secure Greenland\u2019s territorial waters in the Arctic, and he has argued that the US needs to seize the island for its own national security.<\/p>\n But Greenlandic and Danish leaders have rejected the US president\u2019s stance, which recently spurred mass protests under the banner, \u201cHands off Greenland\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cTariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context,\u201d French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media after Trump issued his economic threat on Saturday.<\/p>\n \u201cEuropeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner should they be confirmed. We will ensure that European sovereignty is upheld,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s about-face on the tariffs came just hours after he told world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday that while the annexation of Greenland was necessary, his administration would not use force to do it.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople thought I would use force. I don\u2019t have to use force. I don\u2019t want to use force. I won\u2019t use force,\u201d said Trump, adding that he was \u201cseeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland\u201d by the US.<\/p>\n Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lkke Rasmussen had reiterated that negotiations on the transfer of Greenland to the US were out of the question.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will not enter into negotiations based on abandoning fundamental principles,\u201d Rasmussen told broadcaster DR after Trump\u2019s Davos speech. \u201cWe will never do that.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cIt is positive in itself that he says he will not use military force, but it does not solve the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n Rasmussen and other European leaders also welcomed Trump\u2019s announcement that he wouldn\u2019t impose tariffs on their countries.<\/p>\n Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard noted that Trump\u2019s \u201cdemands about moving borders\u201d had received \u201cwell-earned criticism\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is \u200calso why \u2060we have repeated that we will not be blackmailed,\u201d she wrote on X. \u201cIt appears \u200cthat our work together with allies has had \u200dan impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n US president says \u2018framework of a future deal\u2019 on Greenland and wider Arctic region reached with NATO chief Mark Rutte.
